We are proud to offer the following services
Tree removals: Removing a tree can be an extremely hazardous job and should only be attempted by a trained professional. A dead or dying tree poses an immediate danger to people and to property and should be dealt with as soon as possible. At Pacific West Tree Service Inc. we have the trained staff and the equipment needed to properly and safely remove your trees. It is important that all options are discussed prior to making a decision to remove a tree. Once an informed decision has been made it is equally important that you are kept abreast of the removal process. Our Staff will ensure that the Homeowners/Contractors are informed and that they are an integral part of the decision making process. Whenever possible, upon successful completion of the tree removal, we like to promote the planting of a replacement tree. Perhaps a more sustainable variety or possibly a more suitable location. Our Arborists are happy to guide you when choosing a replacement tree.
Danger Tree Assessments: Knowing the current health of a tree is extremely important when determining the appropriate method of either ongoing care of the tree or removal of the tree. It is important that our Arborists examine your trees before making an educated assessment. Once a determination has been made about the current health of the tree, our Arborists can help guide you in making a decision as to what care may be required to ensure good health and an aesthetically pleasing tree or should a removal be deemed necessary, our Arborists will explain in detail any processes required for the safe removal of your trees.
Hedge Trimming and Shaping: Hedge trimming should be performed according to the species of hedge as some hedges need to be trimmed more frequently. Slow growing hedges such as Boxwood and Cedar are normally trimmed once a year, however Chinese Elm and Privet hedges can be trimmed as many as 3-5 times a year Trimming a hedge properly is not only is appealing to the eye but ensures ongoing good health of the hedge.
Stump chipping: often called “stump grinding” When a tree is remove a section of the tree and root ball remain in the ground. The stump and roots can be ground down to a depth deep enough to replant grass, a garden or another tree. Stump grinding removes your stump quickly and efficiently. Chips from the stump grinding can be spread around your garden making a good protective layer to help control weeds and keep out the weather or if you wish they can be removed from the site. A 36” access is required to allow for the stump grinding machine.
Windowing/View Trimming: Windowing is most often done when a tree is obstructing the view When you “Window” a tree you actually create a window in the middle of the tree so that you can see through to the other side. This “Window” allows a view of the landscape beyond the tree. A tree that is windowed improperly will become disfigured
Crown Reduction: Crown reduction is used to reduce height and spread of the crown. It is helpful in making the tree more suited to its surroundings and/or reduce the effects of shading and light loss and “is not” to be confused with “Topping” ( a harmful method of pruning trees) The final result should leave a similar although smaller outline. Not all species of trees are suitable for this form of pruning. Our arborists will advise you if this method is suitable for your particular tree.
Crown Raising: Crown Raising is done by removing the lowest branches. Good pruning practices dictate that crown raising should not normally include the removal of large branches growing directly from the trunk of the tree. Doing so, can cause large wounds in the tree leading to decay and other long term problems. Whenever possible, Crown lifting on older , more mature tree should be avoided or at the very least restricted to removing secondary branches or “shortening “ of primary branches. This method helps to increase light and allows for access under the crown. Crown lifting should be restricted to “less than 15% of the live crown and leave the crown at least 2/3 of the total height of the tree.
Spiral Pruning: Spiral Pruning or "Crown thinning" is done by removing a portion of smaller branches usually at the outer crown. This method of pruning is used to produce a uniform density of foliage around evenly spaced branch structure. The size and shape of the tree usually remains the same. Reasons for Crown thinning are to allow more light to pass through, to reduce wind resistance and to reduce weight.
Tree Pruning: Tree Pruning improves health and vitality of the tree. It enhances the appearance, improves resistance to weather fluctuations and to helps to strengthen a trees resistance to pests and disease. Pruning will slow down disproportioned tree growth thereby reducing the workload on the roots and improving the overall health and stability of the tree helping to reduce failure during storms and snow falls Our experts will offer you a variety of pruning techniques in accordance to the needs of the tree being worked on.
Topping: Topping is an old form of pruning, often done to open up a view window. It refers to the removal of large portions of the crown of the tree. With greater concern for the environment topping is considered to be a rather “heavy-handed” method of pruning and is not typically used these days, unless the tree being topped is slated for removal at a future date.
Deadwood: To deadwood a tree is to remove Non-living branches or stems Deadwood does provide a variety of habitats and it is important to leave as much as possible with a thought to removing or shortening only those that pose a risk
When to Prune: Due to the milder climate in Vancouver and the Lower Mainland Pruning can be preformed 12 months of the year. There are some exceptions: Cherry, Plums and related trees should be pruned “soon after” flowering to reduce risk of bacterial infection. Maple, Birch, Beech and Walnut should be pruned in leaf or just after leaf fall and Magnolia in high summer to avoid ‘bleeding’ (excluding sap), which, although not considered damaging, can be unsightly. Note: Pruning should be avoided is a tree” has” or “will be” suffering from stress. Construction damage, draught/ extreme weather conditions or a previous pruning can all be considered stress factors . It is usually best to refrain from pruning during leaf/needle production (tree is drawing on it reserves) or at the time of leaf/needle fall (tree is storing its reserves).
